About James Slone and End of Media

I live in Seattle, Washington, where I make a living writing for the University of Washington and freelancing. I mainly read, hike and consume media (music, film, books, news, etc.) for pleasure, though I also spend an inordinate amount of time immersed in history (I have an M.A. in U.S. foreign policy history) and creative projects, like this one!

I started this site to review and criticize films from a social and political angle, since so few film writers take that approach. I like conventional criticism - it certainly has its place - but I was tired of every online film critic looking at Hollywood's output from a purely filmic perspective. I want to consider the content, what film makers are trying to say, consciously or unconsciously, about the world around them. To me, it's important to consider the ramifications of the media we expose ourselves to every waking hour of the day. I don't believe that art is neutral or passive; good or bad, everyone takes something away from it.

I hope you get something out of this approach.

You'll note that in the past there was a lot more writing here on current affairs and politics. With time I've realized that working full time means less time writing. It's simply not possible for me to offer political commentary and film reviews on a regular basis. Hopefully someday that will change.
